How Lockdown has affected what we look for in a home

The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown meant many of us spent more time in our homes than ever before. This has resulted in many of us reassessing what is important in a home and community. Here we look into how lockdown has affected what we look for in a home moving forward.

The new property ‘must-have’ is, unsurprisingly, an office space. Zoopla recently ran a survey that concluded that more than one in five of those surveyed (22%) claimed that having an office area has become more of a priority. This increased to 34% among those aged between 35 and 49. 34% of buyers and renters anticipate working from home more often. The younger respondents in particular agree with this, with 42% of under 65s are planning to work from home more often. And more than half of them will commute to work less.

Having a garden has also become a top priority for a lot of new homeowners. A well maintained garden has proved to be more important than ever, as people have realised the benefits of having an outdoor space for themselves and their families. This also gives people the ability to exercise more effectively at home, which around 20% of those surveyed said was important to them.

Location has also proved to be an even more important factor as people prioritise living closer to friends and family. Around 21% of those surveyed said they would consider moving closer to family in the aftermath of the pandemic.
